Hi. I am planning on attending the feb 10th friday evening premiere as a spotter. This will be my first event. What are the basics of spotting? Etc. Feedback would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to helping out and having fun.

Very good question, and thanks for taking a proactive approach on this. More information regarding spotters and support staff can be found from the Garrison Trooping Handbook, with those excerpts below.
Garrison Trooping Handbook wrote:

Spotters

Appearance:
Non-costumed spotters should wear a sanctioned Garrison shirt that sports the Alpine Garrison logo. Official 501st Legion shirts are acceptable as well.

What they do:
Spotters assist helmeted personnel by keeping a watchful eye on them during a troop. They should be mindful to potential hazards (i.e. Small children which a helmeted member can trip over, or children who are harassing helmeted personal, stairs or steps) and should assist with any costume malfunctions.
Spotters should keep a watchful eye as long as they are at the event. They should not spend extra time in the changing area or conversing with friends. Spotters are our eyes while we are in costume! In addition they assist Alpine Garrison personnel in any other capacity as event circumstances dictate.
Spotters may also assist the Support Staff as runners for supplies.

Support Staff

Appearance:
Support Staff members should wear a sanctioned Garrison shirt that sports the Alpine Garrison logo. Official 501st Legion shirts are acceptable as well.

What they do:
Support Staff are Spotters with a designated responsibility other than watching helmeted personnel. They assist in running cameras for photo booths, computers, printing images, taking money, and/or handling the recruiting table. They also help helmeted personnel suit up and suit down.

As a spotter you need to be "invisible" (but not really). You are there to support the costumed personnel. Helping them dress if they ask for assistance. You are watching for costume pieces falling off and be ready to put them back on. You are checking on the troopers to make sure they get a break when they need. You are keeping kids off the troopers and making sure they aren't running off with props. You are crowd control. You sometimes end up suggesting to a parent that it may not be a good idea to shove their screaming kid towards the troopers (which makes them scream and cry even harder). You show kids that those "scary" people are actually really nice by going up and giving the troopers a High-Five. You are escorting troopers back and forth between the break/storage area and the viewing area. You need to be ready to take a picture when a parent shoves their camera in your hands.

And you do it all with a smile on your face. =)

Tickets will unfortunately be unavailable for Friday, the free ticket for participants will be for Thursday at the 12:00 Am show. Will you be able to attend this showing?

As this is your first event it's not absolutely critical. The shirt identifies you as a member of the group. People may want to ask some questions and they'll look to somebody who looks like they belong.

What size do you wear? I make no promises but there *might* (I stress, *might*) be somebody that has an extra shirt you can use. If somebody asks you a question you don't know the answer to there will be plenty of others who will know that can help you out.

If you have something black and Star Wars-ish it would probably work until you can get a garrison shirt. It doesn't have to be black but it helps as most of the garrison shirts are black.

I think i have a couple shirts that would work perfectly. Also i wear a medium or large. I can deifinitely make it for the midnight show thursday night, however i was planning on doing my spotting on friday night. I would love a ticket if theyre still available. My name is BJ and my # is 8014001289 if calling or texting would be best. Thanks to all for the replies.

I've done a few troops as a spotter and I always feel weird not having a shirt that identifies me with the garrison. I really need a shirt and I keep getting conflicting suggestions how to get one.

Just wear a Star Wars shirt for now. Once you become a member of the 501st you will have access to garrison and 501st shirts. There is a "Galactic Empire Support Crew" shirt out there. I just checked the website and can't seem to find it. There is a Facebook page called Galactic Empire Support Crew that you can join. They have the link to the t-shirt webpage, but as a spotter all you need is a Star Wars shirt.
